School Holiday Workshops – Web Development Courses for Teenagers

Share

We often get asked by parents if our Website In a Day training workshop is suitable for kids.  It certainly is, and over the last year or so have we have had a number of teenagers attend our workshops – and done extremely well.

Tech-savvy teenagers have been brought up in the digital/online world.  They have little fear of technology and are full of confidence when it comes to using online tools and resources, so tend to thrive in our workshops.  They are also used to taking direction and (when motivated) can actually achieve much more than adults who are sometimes cautious or even “scared” of the technology.

We have in fact had so much interest in web training workshops for kids, that we have decided to establish some school holiday workshops designed specifically to meet the needs of teenagers.

Many of our adult students create a website for their business – obviously the average teenager does not (yet) have a business, but there are many other things they could find a website useful for :

  • A Hobby based website – news, info and resources related to a hobby or sport they are passionate about
  • A Personal Blog – their own perspective on day to day life as a teenager
  • A Portfolio Site – an online portfolio of art, fashion, writing or music
  • An Online CV – an outline of skills and experience to assist in getting a job
  • A Business website for their parents business – what better way to get the kids involved in a family business than to have them help out on the technology side (and learn some skills along the way)
  • a Start to their own online business – for the budding entrepreneur

We are in the process of developing our teen friendly workshops, and will add more information, and publish scheduled events when they are ready.  In the interim, if you are interested in having your kids learn how to create and manage websites, or have any suggestions as to what types of training might be suitable, please feel free to contact us.

The Power of Doing

Share

The majority of us spend most of the first 20 years of our lives “learning” how to survive in todays modern society. First with kindergarten, then school, before moving onto college/university, or on the job training. If you look back on it though, most of the things that we have actually learned, come from practical, hands on experience.

Just Do It

How do we Learn?

Even though school and university may have had loads of “theoretical” elements, there were still plenty of hands on activities involved (demonstrations, projects, assignments, and yes, even homework), and it was these practical applications that helped us to understand the theory, and reinforce the learning experience.

It shocks me therefore that many of the “training” courses, seminars and even some of the workshops we tend to go to as adults seem to be largely theory based, with the “speaker” telling us what to do and how to do it. But can we really expect to learn stuff just by listening?

I myself have been to many seminars over the years, and have often been inspired by what was said, taken copious notes, made “To Do” lists, and left feeling motivated to do something. However, within days (and often hours), the inspiration and motivation fades, and within weeks its all a distant memory.

The problem with many training courses and most seminars, is that they are “lecture” as opposed to activity based. Whilst, there are plenty of seminars and courses offering loads of useful and interesting information, unless they also provide you with hands on experience, the long term benefits to you are likley to be very limited.

It is next to impossible for you to learn how to do pretty much anything just by listening to someone. The average person is unlikely to retain knowledge unless they actually “get their hands dirty” by doing and experienceing it.

Learning by Doing

This concept of “Learning by Doing” has been the main inspiration for In a Day Hands on Workshops. All our In a Day training workshops are focused around “hands on”, practical activities, which are designed to support and reinforce the learning experience, by allowing you to get involved and learn by doing. Our goal is that at the completion of any In a Day workshop, you won’t just have learned something, you will have achievd something as well.

Two Thirds of Australian Businesses don’t have a Website

Share

Despite the steadily increasing growth of internet use within Australia, and recognition by small business owners of the importance of having an online presence, according to the MYOB Business Monitor survey, two thirds of Australian businesses say they still don’t have a website.

More than half of surveyed business owners also agreed that the internet was a critical channel for marketing and promoting their businesses.

The MYOB survey shows that nearly a third of businesses with a website increased revenue during the past year, compared to 23% which did not have a website.

MYOB CEO Tim Reed says :

“A website presence is a relatively low-cost way for small business to punch above its weight but businesses were failing to tap into the opportunities.”

It was found that more recent start-ups were more likely to use a website as part of their business operations and marketing.

The survey highlights that 65% of business less than two years old have a website compared to 32% of businesses between five and 10 years old and only 25% of businesses aged over 10 years.

The survey reveals that 73% of businesses don’t use email marketing, 82% don’t use social media and 85% don’t sell anything online.

Some business owners have suggested that they don’t feel that they need an online presence because their customers don’t purchases their goods or services online.

However, whilst  the point of sale might not be online most introductions between business and customers now happen on the internet via online web searches.

If your business does not currently have a website and you are confused by the technology or unsure what you need to do to create one, our Website in a Day Workshop, might be just the thing you  you need to to get started on a DIY Website.  This Hands On workshop provides you with the knowledge and experience you need to create and manage your own website.

If  you realise that your business really does  need a website but you don’t have the time (or inclination ) to create it yourself, we can build a website for you in just a day.
